Jay-Z goes back to his roots at Brooklyn stadium launch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rap superstar Jay-Z returned to his home borough
for a sold-out concert on Friday night to open Brooklyn's new
basketball stadium.

The rapper who grew up just two miles away from the new Barclays
Center arena - now the home court of the Brooklyn Nets basketball team
- talked about how far he had come in a show sprinkled with emotional
speeches.

"I've been on many stages all around the world and nothing feels like
tonight," Jay-Z told the cheering audience.

"I'm really overwhelmed by the moment," he said as he described his
humble beginnings in Marcy Houses, a Brooklyn public housing project
he noted was just 15 minutes away from the arena. "I can't believe
that this day has come."

Jay-Z, who raps about the time he spent as a drug dealer, released his
first album in 1996. He is now one of the most successful rappers in
the world, owns a minority stake in the Nets and has businesses
including a clothing label.

He encouraged members of the packed crowd to have their own stab at success.

"I believe everybody in the world is born with genius level talent ...
Apply yourself to whatever you're genius at and you can do anything in
the world," he said.

It was the first of eight Jay-Z concerts planned for the venue in the
arena's first week.

Jay-Z sported the team's jersey and hat as he sang recent hits like
Empire State of Mind and returned to his highly acclaimed debut album
Reasonable Doubt.

The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has been heavily involved
in the promotion of the 18,000-seat arena, which took years to move
from concept to reality partly because it met with legal challenges
and opposition from people in nearby residential areas such as Fort
Greene and Park Slope.

The stadium, which started construction in 2009, will bring a major
professional sports team back to Brooklyn for the first time in 55
years when the Dodgers baseball team moved away from Brooklyn to Los
Angeles and became the L.A. Dodgers.

Jay-Z showed off a jersey worn by Dodgers player Jackie Robinson -
also the first African American Major League Baseball player.

He paid tribute to deceased rap star and fellow Brooklyn native
Notorious B.I.G. by projecting an image of him on the stage and
covering two of his songs. Brooklyn hip-hop pioneer Big Daddy Kane
appeared later in the evening.

Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand and the Smashing Pumpkins are all due to
appear at the Barclays Center during its first two months

Samsung wins reconsideration of Galaxy Tab sales ban

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday that a
lower court should reconsider a sales ban against Samsung's Galaxy Tab
10.1 won by Apple in a patent dispute with the South Korean
electronics maker.

The injunction was put in place ahead of a month-long trial that
pitted iPhone maker Apple Inc against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in a
closely watched legal battle that ended with a resounding victory for
Apple last month on many of its patent violation claims.

However, the jury found that Samsung had not violated the patent that
was the basis for the tablet injunction and Samsung argued the sales
ban should be lifted. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said she could not
act because Samsung had already appealed.

In its ruling on Friday, the Federal U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in
Washington said Koh could now consider the issue.

The decision comes just a month before the South Korean corporation is
expected to unveil the second generation of one of its most successful
devices, the stylus-equipped Note.

The Galaxy 10.1 is an older model, but the ban still hurts Samsung in
the run-up to the pivotal holiday shopping season.

The world's top two smartphone makers are locked in patent disputes in
10 countries as they vie to dominate the lucrative market, which is
growing rapidly.

A U.S. jury found during the just-concluded trial that Samsung had
copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad and awarded Apple
$1.05 billion in damages.

NEW RESEARCH UPDATE -- WATCHING TV SHORTENS LIFESPAN BY 22 MINUTES

Anyone who spends six hours a day in front of the box is at risk of
dying five years sooner than those who enjoy more active pastimes, it
is claimed.
Researchers say that watching too much TV is as dangerous as smoking
or being overweight, and that the "ubiquitous sedentary behaviour"
should be seen as a "public health problem".

Experts from the University of Queensland, Australia, write: "TV
viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of
lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of
TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes."

Referring to Australian and American guidelines that suggest children
should spend no more than two hours a day in front of a screen, the
academics conclude: "With further corroborative evidence, a public
health case could be made that adults also need to limit the time
spent watching TV."

Although health campaigners – and parents – have long warned of the
dangers of watching too much television, its effects on life
expectancy have never before been calculated. In a paper published in
the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Dr J Lennert Veerman and
colleagues looked at the results of a survey of 11,247 Australians
taken in 1999-2000, which asked about time spent watching TV, and also
mortality figures for the country. They constructed a model in which
they compared life expectancy for adults who watch TV to those who did
not, and worked out that every hour spent glued to the screen
shortened life by 21.8 minutes.

For those in the top 1 per cent of the population who watch six hours
of programmes a day, they "can expect to live 4.8 years less than a
person who does not watch TV".

The researchers say that watching TV is among the most common forms of
sedentary behaviour, along with sitting in cars."Because TV viewing is
a ubiquitous behaviour that occupies significant portions of adults"
leisure time, its effects are significant for overall population
health."

England's Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies, said: "Physical
activity offers huge benefits and these studies back what we already
know – that doing a little bit of physical activity each day brings
health benefits and a sedentary lifestyle carries additional risks.

"That's why the UK's Chief Medical Officers recently updated their
advice on physical activity to be more flexible, right from babyhood
to adult life.

"Adults, for example, can get their 150 minutes of activity a week in
sessions of 10 minutes or more and for the first time we have provided
guidelines on reducing sedentary time.

"We hope these studies will help more people realise that there are
many ways to get exercise – activities like walking at a good pace or
digging the garden over can count too."

Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation,
said: "Sedentary behaviour such as vegging in front of the TV is
practically a cultural institution these days and it's good to relax
for a while, but this study supports the view that too much of it can
be bad for our health.

"Many of us make a conscious decision not to smoke because we know
it's bad for us, and this study suggests that more of us should make
the same kind of pledge about lounging around and watching lots of TV.

"Introducing more activity to our daily lives, whether it's walking to
the shops instead of taking the bus, using the stairs instead of the
lift or taking up active hobbies like sport or gardening mean we won't
spend as much time in front of the TV where we are likely to pile on
the pounds."

THE TEENAGE GIRL WHO HAS TRANSFORMED HERSELF INTO A LIVING CARTOON CHARACTER

Anime fan Anastasiya Shpagina has transformed herself into a living
cartoon character, complete with miniature waist, vividly-coloured
hair, and a cupid's bow pout.

Originally from the Ukraine, the 19-year-old takes style inspiration
from the cartoons and computer animations that have a huge following
in Japan, and has even adopted a Japanese name – Fukkacumi.

Anime characters often feature huge eyes and heads that are
disproportionately large in comparison to their body.

Shpagina, who is just 5ft2ins tall, is already reported to have
slimmed down to just over six stone in her attempts to resemble a
living anime character, and is said to spend 30 minutes painstakingly
applying her dramatic make-up to each one of her eyes.

It is thought Shpagina may go even further in her efforts to achieve
her desired look, with some reports claiming she intends to undergo
surgery on her eyes to make her resemble her anime idols even more
closely.

The teenager, who has over 10,000 fans on Facebook, also posts videos
on YouTube demonstrating how she applies her make-up.

One clip, in which Shpagina reveals to fans how she achieves her
'flower fairy' look, has been watched more than 150,000 times

Shpagina is not the first young girl to take style inspiration from
the world of fantasy. American Dakota Rose – or Kota Koti – has been
dubbed the 'real-life Barbie' thanks to her doe-eyed stare and dainty
proportions.

The teenager has amassed a global audience by posting fashion and
beauty tutorials on YouTube.

Arsenal (Giovincho )1-2 Chelsea: Torres & Mata on target as Blues extend lead at the top

Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League following
a hugely impressive victory over previously unbeaten Arsenal at
Emirates Stadium.

Spaniards Juan Mata and Fernando Torres were on the scoresheet as
they, temporarily at least, moved four points clear of Manchester
United and created daylight between themselves and their north London
rivals. Chelsea protected their lead with a calmness that suggests
their stay at the Premier League summit may well be a long one.

MURDER: CHEF MURDERS WIFE, COOKS FOR FOUR DAYS, THEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE

The wickedness of man is unfathomable, and the horrible things men do
keep one asking why some men are just so wicked to the extent of
taking the life of another.

David and wife when the going was good

Huffington Post reported that a California chef accused of murdering
his wife sometime before she vanished in October 2009, tried to commit
suicide by jumping off an 80-foot cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes after
learning he was being investigated as a suspect.

David Viens was in March 2011 interviewed by detectives from a
hospital bed as he recuperates from his high altitude fall. He stated,
"I just slowly cooked it and I ended up cooking her for four days."

Viens claims to only have kept the skull, telling investigators, "The
skull was the only thing I didn't want to get rid of in case I wanted
to leave it somewhere, it's in my mother's attic."

The incident occurred when Viens accidentally murdered his wife, Dawn
Viens. He tied her to the bed and duct-taped her mouth closed. The
next morning, he was reportedly surprised to find her dead body.

David Viens is scheduled to be sentenced on November 27. If convicted,
he could face 15 years to life in prison.
