Five feared dead as boat capsizes in Bayelsa

Five persons were feared dead on Saturday in the Akenfa suburb of
Yenagoa, Bayelsa State when canoes transporting passengers capsized,
eyewitnesses said.

Witnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa that the tragedy
occurred when the two canoes, transporting persons from Akenfa III to
Akenfa I, capsized on the Epie Creek at about 8a.m.

NAN reports that the accident is one of the major disasters recorded
due to the ravaging flood in the state in the past three weeks.

Witnesses said the two canoes collided close to where they were
supposed to have berthed at Akenfa I due to panic by the passengers.

NAN learnt that the five persons, who had yet to be rescued from the
creek, included a woman with a baby strapped on her back. A NAN
correspondent who visited the scene reports that a large crowd was
seen at banks of the Epie Creek at Akenfa III, the take-off point, and
Akenfa I, the destination.

Meanwhile some officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission who
said they had received a distress call, added that the Nigerian Navy
had been notified due to the commission's handicap.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command's Public Relations
Officer, DSP Fidelis Odunna, who confirmed the incident, however, said
that three persons and the driver
of one of the canoes, were missing.

Lindsay Lohan 'Needs Help' Says Dad Michael: 'I'm Not Going To Watch Her Die'

Michael Lohan showed up unexpectedly to Lindsay's Beverly Hills home
on Friday in an attempt to stage an intervention with the embattled

he refuses to watch his daughter die.

"Lindsay needs help. She's around all the wrong people," Michael said.

"I'm not going to stand for this anymore. She has to get better. I'm

According to Michael, Lindsay has been dating a personal trainer in
Los Angeles named Josh Chunn, and he was in full compliance with
Michael's attempt to get his daughter help.

dating a guy named Josh Chunn and he told me, 'I feel the same way you

ACHEBE- THERE WAS A COUNTRY: WHY HAUSA-FULANIS, YORUBAS HATE IGBOS

Africa's literary giant and celebrated writer Chinua Achebe, has
claimed that Nigerians, especially the Hausa/Fulanis and the Yorubas,
do not like the Igbos because of their cultural ideology that
emphasizes 'change, individualism and competitiveness.'

He made this claim in his new book, There was a Country, which has
generated controversy for his onslaught on the role of Obafemi Awolowo
as the federal commissioner of finance during the Nigeria civil war.
He accused Awolowo of genocide and imposition of food blockade on
Biafra, a claim that has drawn rebuttals and contradictions of
emotional intensity from some southwest leaders and commentators.

"I have written in my small book entitled The Trouble with Nigeria
that Nigerians will probably achieve consensus on no other matter than
their common resentment of the Igbo," he wrote under the heading, A
History of Ethnic Tension and Resentment. He traced the origin of "the
national resentment of the Igbo" to its culture that "gave the Igbo
man an unquestioned advantage over his compatriots in securing
credentials for advancement in Nigerian colonial society."

He observed that the Igbo culture's emphasis on change, individualism
and competitiveness gave his ethnic group an edge over the
Hausa/Fulani man who was hindered by a "wary religion" and the Yoruba
man who was hampered by" traditional hierarchies."

He therefore described the Igbo, who are predominantly Catholic, as
"fearing no god or man, was "custom-made to grasp the opportunities,
such as they were, of the white man's dispensations. And the Igbo did
so with both hands."

He delved into history with his claim, asserting that the Igbo
overcame the earlier Yoruba advantage within two decades earlier in
the twentieth century.

"Although the Yoruba had a huge historical and geographical head
start, the Igbo wiped out their handicap in one fantastic burst of
energy in the twenty years between 1930 and 1950."

He narrated the earlier advantage of Yoruba as contingent on their
location on the coastline, but once the missionaries crossed the
Niger, the Igbo took advantage of the opportunity and overtook the
Yoruba.

'The increase was so exponential in such a short time that within
three short decades the Igbos had closed the gap and quickly moved
ahead as the group with the highest literacy rate, the highest
standard of living, and the greatest of citizens with postsecondary
education in Nigeria," he contended.

He said Nigerian leadership should have taken advantage of the gbo
talent and this failure was partly responsible for the failure of the
Nigerian state, explaining further that competitive individualism and
the adventurous spirit of the Igbo was a boon Nigerian leaders failed
to recognize and harness for modernization.

"Nigeria's pathetic attempt to crush these idiosyncrasies rather than
celebrate them is one of the fundamental reasons the country has not
developed as it should and has emerged as a laughingstock," he
claimed.

He noted that the ousting of prominent Igbos from top offices was a
ploy to achieve a simple and crude goal. He said what the Nigerians
wanted was to "get the achievers out and replace them with less
qualified individuals from the desired ethnic background so as to gain
access to the resources of the state."

Achebe, however, saved some criticisms for his kinsmen. He criticised
them for what he described as "hubris, overweening pride and
thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or even worse that can
obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of
crude showiness."

He added that "contemporary Igbo behavior (that) can offend by its
noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness.

Popular Singer, St. Janet, Finds Her New Husband in Bed with Her Daughter

Despite her musical success, St Janet 's happiness on the home front
is fast turning into nightmares barely two months after marrying her
heartthrob, Olukayode Samuel Iyun who
incidentally is her bandmanager.

It was gathered that the stocky built singer has packed out of her
matrimonial home following a shocking discovery by her about her
husband sleeping with one of her daughters. The girl (name withheld)
from St Janet 's previous marriage was reported to have spent the last
holiday with her mother and step-father at their Ilapo Estate,
Alagbado home.

St Janet was said to be happy at the opportunity of being reunited
with her daughter who was before then staying with one of her
relations.

Unfortunately, her joy soon turned into despair as rumours started
making the rounds about an amorous relationship between her daughter
and her new husband.

All doubts about her suspicion were cleared recently when she
allegedly caught her husband making love to her daughter whose age was
put around 16 right inside her matrimonial home.

Sources close to the musician said the despicable act had thrown St
Janet off-balance and dejected and she has swore never to forgive her
man, Kay, as her husband is fondly called.

It was learnt that the development has forced the lewd singer to move
out of her matrimonial home as she could not bear the shame which the
incident had brought upon her. It was also disclosed that St Janet has
temporarily moved to an hotelwithin the neighbourhood to fend off
contact with Kay.

To say St Janet is enraged by the ugly incident is to say the least,
she is completely devastated as she reportedly cancelled all
engagements for about two weeks ostensibly to recover from the rude
shock, a source added.

However, a close source to the singer is trying to down play the
shameful incident. He said the only problem between the St Janet and
her husband is a minor misunderstanding that might be resolved soon.

Tragedy. : Ex-Corp and Girl Friend Killed By Unknown Gun Men

Two weeks after four students of the University of Port Harcourt
(UNIPORT) in a Omuokiri, Aluu, another tragedy struck in another host
community of the institution as unknown gunmen killed another student
of the school, his girlfriend and an ex-National Youth Corps member.

The incident occurred at Rumuchakara village in Choba community, the
major host community of the university.

THISDAY gathered that the former corp member, who only passed out on
Thursday, decided to celebrate his graduation from the National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC) with his friends.

The ex-corps member was said to have gone out with the two friends to
celebrate his graduation from the service and were returning from the
outing when the car they were driving
in skidded off the road and ran into a shop in the village.

Though no life was lost after the accident, an argument was said to
have ensued between the owner of the shop and the occupants of the
car.

It was at that point that some men in an SUV arrived at the scene of
the incident and opened fire on the crowd, killing the ex-corps
member, the UNIPORT student and his girl friend,
killing them instantly.

According to an eyewitness, who would not wish to be named, "The corps
member and his friends were drunk while driving and their vehicle ran
into a shop. There was a serious argument between them and the owner
of the shop.

"Within a short time, a group of men in an SUV came out and opened
fire on the three persons, who died on the spot.

The gunmen immediately drove away without any challenge." The names of
those killed by the unknown gunmen could not be ascertained as at the
time of filing this report.

Reacting to the incident, the UNIPORT Public Relations Officer, Dr.
Williams Wodi, said the university was shut down while students were
asked to leave the hostels and go back to their various homes.

Wodi explained that the reason for such directive was for the
management of the institution to re-evaluate the security situation on
campus, adding that he was not in a position to
speak for students expected to be currently under their parents' care.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer,
Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, said security agencies had begun investigations
into the matter.

Ugwuegbulam said the incident occurred around 9.30pm on Thursday. He
assured the public that those behind the killings would be apprehended
and brought to justice.
